tony toni tone deaf

Published on March 25, 2009

a few things i’m thinking/reading, various levels of controversy.

the drones get a blah review on pitchfork. this reminds me of an augie march pitchfork review i read back at the height of parochial augiemania. the drones, augie march… eddy current?.. aussies wet themselves, the world collectively shrugs. i personally think pitchfork should pay more attention to truly great aussie releases like kram & thirsty merc.

one view of the musical middle class. some further proof that the ‘new music business’ is great fodder for marketing dudes to come up with some crazy batshit ideas:

i think this makes me a hunter-gatherer.

rudd meets with obama. be representin, kev. is this, incidentally, the picture of barack that hangs in kevin’s bedroom above the dresser?

some musical goodies… thanks to a heads-up from leigh, and i think this also made an appearance over at mad decent – an 8-bit hip hop medley courtesy of tugboat. you haven’t lived until you’ve heard “dirt off your shoulders”, “ridin” and “gold digger” as piped through a nintendo emulator. ridiculous how much feel and swagger you can actually swing out of those little bits if you know what you’re doing. this is like the best cracktro music of all time – also makes a great ringtone or five.

also loving:

i thought i was over the idea of “guilty pleasures” and that i was close to a total surrender to an idea of a pure love of music that goes way beyond guilt, shame and irony, falling over rainbows, clouds of shameless ecstasy and all that. but i keep putting off listening to the friendly fires record because i have a feeling i’m going to like it, and then feel guilty about it. the shame instinct is still in me! guide me metatron, guide me.

YES I WILL MAKE TIME TO LISTEN TO YOUR PRISTINELY EXECUTED TEENAGE DISCO ART POP

lastly. my weekend. when i wasn’t looking at ableton, or my keyboard, or my guitar, i was looking at this, mostly:

Was the Tony Toni Tone deaf reference to ‘It Never Rains In Southern California’? Good song, but Saadiq gets way off-key.

  2. Tim says:

there was a band called tony toni tone? what a CRZY COIDINCIDENCE

  3. Michael says:

Someone linked me to some mp3s of themes from Zelda with hip-hop acapellas on them. Something about ‘The Ocarina of Rhyme’. Anyway, if you like that 8-bit medley you could investigate that I guess.
